PRO WORKSHOP (CloudX): Your Serverless Streaming Data Pipeline in Python
Tuesday November 5, 2024 1:00pm - 1:50pm PST
Bobur Umurzokov, GlassFlow, Developer Advocate

We often hear stories from Kafka users about taking nine months to implement production-ready Kafka-based data pipelines. We see customers having 50 teams relying on a single Kafka cluster managed by one person. Data engineers cannot easily simulate a production environment without a complex initial setup. Or data scientists struggle with data integration, building an offline ML pipeline to experiment, reproduce models, and debug them locally. Let's explore how to skip the headache of creating computing clusters, managing partitions, shards, and workers' setup.

The talk demonstrates a different way of implementing a cost-efficient serverless streaming pipeline using pure Python. We will leverage technologies like KEDA (Kubernetes Event-Driven Autoscaling) with integrated NATS Jetstream for the distribution of real-time events and Fission serverless framework to run lambda-like functions on Kubernetes.

PRO SESSION (CloudX): Which Vault? Don’t Tell Me Your Secret(s)!
Wednesday November 6, 2024 10:30am - 10:55am PST
Michel Schildmeijer, SSC-ICT, Lead Technologist

Secret management is a crucial aspect of DevOps, as it involves the protection of sensitive data that is used by applications and services. Secrets can include API keys, credentials, tokens, certificates, and passwords that grant access to various resources and systems. If these secrets are compromised, attackers can exploit them to cause damage, steal information, or disrupt operations.
One of the challenges of secret management is how to securely store, distribute, and rotate secrets in a dynamic and distributed environment. Traditional methods of hard-coding secrets in configuration files or environment variables are not secure, scalable, or reliable. Moreover, secrets need to be updated frequently to comply with security policies and regulations, and to prevent unauthorized access.
To address these challenges, several tools and frameworks have been developed to provide secret management solutions for DevOps.
These tools can help DevOps teams to implement best practices for secret management.

Wednesday November 6, 2024 11:00am - 11:25am PST
Vilas Veeraraghavan, Truckstop, Vice President, Engineering

Cloud computing is mainstream now and businesses must choose between the flexibility of multi-cloud strategies and the focused efficiency of single-vendor solutions. This talk delves into the challenges and learnings from past experiences at Netflix (single cloud vendor approach) and Walmart (hybrid/multi-cloud).

A single-vendor strategy can offer exceptional scalability and reliability by leveraging deep expertise and tight integration with a specific cloud provider. We will delve into the benefits of this approach, including optimized performance, streamlined operations, and the potential risks of vendor dependency.

On the other hand, a multi-cloud approach enhances resilience, avoids vendor lock-in, and provides cost optimization opportunities. This session will examine how to manage the complexities of integrating multiple cloud services, ensuring interoperability, and achieving operational agility.

Attendees will gain valuable insights into the trade-offs and strategic considerations involved in choosing a cloud strategy. Whether your organization is leaning towards the agility of multi-provider solutions or the specialized focus of single-vendor expertise, this talk will equip you with the knowledge to navigate the complexities of cloud management effectively.

PRO SESSION (CloudX): How We Implemented Zero Trust Security Using Cilium
Wednesday November 6, 2024 11:00am - 11:25am PST
Lakmal Warusawithana, WSO2, Technology Evangelist

Implementing a zero trust approach is essential for security, as it involves verifying and validating every request, irrespective of its origin or location.

In the initial implementation of Choreo, our internal Developer Platform as a Service, we faced challenges in controlling all network access and enforcing authentication, authorization, and seamless network traffic encryption at scale, which is vital for the Choreo cloud service. However, by employing Cilium, K8s, and a cell-based architecture, we were able to develop a scalable platform that upholds zero trust security principles.

The combination of Cilium's eBPF-powered layer 3, 4, and 7 network policies, Hubble Observability, IPSec security, and a cell-based architecture enabled us to address all the critical elements of a zero trust platform successfully.

In this talk, I will detail all the challenges we faced and the strategies we employed to overcome them.

KEYNOTE (CLOUDX): CloudZero -- Streamlining the Digital Factory: Lean Cloud Computing for Next-Gen Software Development
Wednesday November 6, 2024 1:30pm - 1:55pm PST
Erik Peterson, CloudZero, CTO & Founder

The cloud-centric world has turned every line of code into a buying decision and highlighted the economic aspects of software design. After first struggling with the ramifications of this, (and a meager $3000.00 budget on my first cloud project in 2009) I discovered how cloud economics presented an opportunity to merge efficiency concepts taken from classic manufacturing with modern software engineering and architecture.

Since that time we have seen an industry wide focus on cloud cost management and new practices like FinOps emerge, but few have explored how to apply cloud economics directly to modern DevOps practices resulting in million dollar lines of code and unprofitable system design that has soured some on cloud computing as a whole. My experience however has been very different. I will share the lessons I've learned over the last 15 years treating cost as a key non-functional requirement during development.

By integrating the Theory of Constraints, Lean Manufacturing, and unit economics, alongside cloud cost efficiency goals and performance as crucial inputs, I will share a strategy that fosters continuous improvement and boosts profitability under current consumption-based cloud pricing models. This approach ensures an economical path from concept to deployment, and ongoing operations, without compromising innovation and time-to-market.

Sourav Khandelwal, Databricks, Sr Software Engineer

Managing a vast fleet of Kubernetes clusters across multiple cloud providers like AWS, Azure, and GCP is often fraught with inefficient manual processes involving scripts and pipelines. These methods are time-consuming, error-prone, and consume valuable engineering resources. In this session, I will present how we addressed these challenges at Databricks by developing an automated system for the lifecycle management of over a thousand multi-cloud-managed Kubernetes clusters.
Our solution features a Kubernetes-style continuous reconciliation mechanism for cluster provisioning and deprovisioning, a fast and reliable cluster state change discovery system integrated with Databricks’ product services, and blue-green cluster rotations (cluster swaps) that allow for seamless upgrades by creating new clusters with updated configurations and shifting workloads without downtime.
This automation enables us to implement major infrastructure changes and upgrade Kubernetes versions with low risk through staged rollouts, seamless rollbacks, zero downtime, and minimal operator intervention. I will share our methodologies and experiences in constructing this loosely coupled system that orchestrates product workloads and cloud provider APIs.

PRO SESSION (CloudX): Ephemeral Development Environment: Sometimes Short-Lived Isn't All That
Wednesday November 6, 2024 3:00pm - 3:25pm PST
Ramiro Berrelleza, Okteto, Founder

We've been told to look for long-lasting things and products, but one thing that's better when it's short-lived and ephemeral is: ephemeral development environments.

Development environments refer to the tools and platforms developers use to write, test, and debug their code. In today's fast-paced technology world, developers must be able to adapt quickly and efficiently, which is where ephemeral development environments come in handy.

This talk will cover and show the advantages of these environments over traditional setups:

- easy to experiment with different ideas
- no pains of dependency management
- easily replicable and maintainable thanks to version control
- always up to date and secure
- reduces clutter and technical debt

The talk will also connect these advantages to real-world outcomes organizations care about - developer productivity and happiness, and time to market.

OPEN SESSION (API): Automated Retry Strategy: A Smart Way to Provision Cloud Resources
Wednesday November 6, 2024 3:00pm - 3:25pm PST
Vicky Deliwala, Cisco Systems, Software Engineering Leader

In the modern era of the cloud environment, users needs to think about handling the temporary service interruptions caused by API and micro-services failure.
As the applications interact with remote services and cloud resources, transient faults are more likely to be encountered.
Events such as API’s throttle limits, connection failures, Quota exhaustion, power outage etc. can lead to such unwanted
faults and not so good user experience.

The best practice in such scenarios is to come up with an automated and intelligent retry mechanism which can hide the temporary exceptions from the customers. Challenges faced while designing such strategy are fault identification, tracking
Retry counter, appropriate log instrumentation and custom fallback. This presentation will focus on defining a smart Retry strategy along with specific guidelines to overcome
such challenges gracefully. Through a deep dive into real world scenario, this session will walk-through the design/architecture of RESTful API’s to provision OpenStack VMs along with NoSQL. It will showcase the profound Retry Logic implementation
using the Cron job and scheduler which can significantly improve user experience.

Most important things that people will learn from presentation:

- Transient failures in cloud native apps and how to utilize smart and profound logic to mitigate those challenges.
- Walk through the workflow of a real life scenario to understand the best practices in integrating automated Retry strategy while designing API driven micro-services.

OPEN SESSION (CloudX): Is Your Engineering Org Really Prepared for the GenAI Revolution?!
Wednesday November 6, 2024 4:00pm - 4:25pm PST
Yishai Beeri, LinearB, CTO

GenAI has gone from generally available, novel technology to widely adopted in a matter of months. Most engineering organizations are using GenAI to generate code, write tests, and assist in code reviews. New code is becoming dirt cheap to write - but our delivery pipelines remain miserably unprepared for the tsunami of new code flowing at a much more rapid pace.

Our current pipelines need a hard reset to prepare us for the GenAI revolution - and engineering managers need to get started TODAY.

This talk will dive into where GenAI is starting to break down our delivery pipelines. While scaling CI/CD is easy, and we can always add a few more workers, scaling the humans in the process is the hard part. This talk will demonstrate how massive amounts of new machine-generated code will impact our pipelines, in ways that will require either greater headcount, or smarter, automated pipelines. You'll come away with ideas for how to modernize your delivery pipeline so you can fully embrace the GenAI revolution.

OPEN SESSION (API): Unlocking Live Data Access for AI
Thursday November 7, 2024 10:00am - 10:25am PST
Anushrut Gupta, Hasura, Senior Product Manager, Generative AI

“Over the last 3 months, summarize the top billing issues faced by my enterprise customers within the first 30 days of their onboarding.”

On the surface, building an internal AI customer intelligence application that can answer questions like this is a perfect use-case for Gen AI.
However, building a production ready app that retrieves the data (RAG) before hauling it off to your favorite LLM for summarization soon becomes a terrible engineering experience.

The data is spread across 3 places: a tickets database (eg: elastic), a CRM (eg: salesforce) and your user-accounts transactional database (eg: postgres).
In production, your app can’t access the data from these databases directly. Given security & privacy concerns, your app won’t have direct access to these databases.
Making independent retrieval requests to each of these sources and then joining them in memory might be prohibitively expensive and needs a level of query planning to do efficiently.
Moving all data into one location is expensive to build, maintain and govern
Predictable quality is further made hard because underlying data formats and storage interfaces are continuously changing.
Different types of user queries might require additional filtering and joining of data, which becomes hard to generalize.

APIs solve almost all of these very well known challenges. APIs offer standardization and security. APIs can provide a stable contract to interact with underlying data.

And in all likelihood, you already have APIs on these internal and external data sources.

Ironically, while APIs have become a necessity for other parts of the stack, they are clearly not the first thing that AI engineers building RAG reach for.

In this talk, we’ll discuss:
Why API based retrieval doesn’t work well for RAG
What we need from our existing internal and external APIs to make them RAG ready
How we can get existing APIs to become RAG ready without needing to rebuild the APIs

This talk will be technical, with code demos (possibly with some live coding!) and end with key resources (reference architectures, API best practices, tools/technologies) that attendees can take back to their work.

If you work in vulnerability management or DevSecOps programs, you’re probably familiar with the painful condition known as CVE overload. Each year, tens of thousands of new vulnerabilities are reported, which causes stress and late nights for the teams tasked with remediating them.

And that’s not to mention the herculean tax of distinguishing between potential vulnerabilities and confirmed vulnerabilities. The reality that most vulnerabilities are only potentially exploitable (as determined by the deployed context of each package) also means remediation often results in a lot of wasted time and effort.

A proposed solution is VEX (Vulnerability Exploitability eXchange): a set of formats that communicates vulnerability impact status, whether a vulnerability is exploitable in its deployed context, and mitigation steps. In theory, VEX (when used alongside other prioritization inputs) makes it possible to remediate more efficiently. But as with most security frameworks, efficacy depends on proper implementation.

This talk will cover five steps to leveraging VEX throughout the vulnerability remediation lifecycle, from the time a vulnerability is disclosed to the time you publish and distribute a VEX statement. We’ll cover the tools and workflows teams need to know to effectively use VEX in their organizations.

OPEN SESSION (CloudX):: Managing Data Security in Multi-Cloud Environments
Thursday November 7, 2024 10:30am - 10:55am PST
Kevin Hunt, Cloud Storage Security, CTO

Ransomware attacks, breaches, data exfiltration, and insider disclosures are occurring every day around the world. Legacy thinking on providing data security has been focused on the application and platform or operating system. This leads to a somewhat chaotic data security landscape that is likely to have holes and missed handoffs. Modern enterprise systems use and store data using the most effective platform that delivers the convenience and performance required. This open-ended approach to data handling should be addressed through an equally open and flexible approach to securing data regardless of where it is stored or how and when it is used.
Businesses should take a holistic view of their data security to ensure that unintended gaps and inconsistencies that may open the door for threat propagation are detected and mitigated. Enacting multiple layers of data management practices ensures that both stored and inflight data is clean.
This keynote will draw on the Data Security Maturity Model (DSMM) to illustrate the challenges developers and users face in the open landscape of current application deployments. Placing a strong focus on a layered framework that provides consistent and robust security for data as it is used, this approach incorporates seamless malware scanning and detection that provides a constant watch for irregularities and threats.

OPEN SESSION (CloudX): The Critical Role of Observability in Cloud Native Applications: Ensuring Reliability and Minimizing Downtime
Thursday November 7, 2024 1:00pm - 1:25pm PST
Greg Leffler, Splunk, Director of Developer Evangelism - Observability

As organizations have moved to the cloud and increased their pace of innovation to ship software more often, it becomes harder to validate the impact of changes – both to their business and to their customers’ experience. That’s where Observability comes into play. Observability has emerged as a critical aspect of cloud native applications due to its ability to provide comprehensive insights into the complex and dynamic environments these applications operate within. By enabling real-time monitoring, tracing, and logging, observability allows users to proactively identify and resolve performance issues, improve reliability and build better digital experiences. This is crucial in helping organizations lower the cost of unplanned downtime and be more resilient.

Downtime not only results in direct financial losses, often quantified in thousands of dollars per minute for large enterprises, but also incurs indirect costs such as reduced customer satisfaction, loss of trust, and potential long-term reputational damage. To illustrate these benefits, we will demonstrate a troubleshooting scenario in a microservice environment using an advanced observability tool, showcasing how timely insights can present and resolve issues efficiently. As a result, investing in robust observability tools and practices is essential for maintaining the reliability and efficiency of cloud native applications, ultimately supporting business continuity and growth.

OPEN SESSION (CloudX): Shifting the Perspective on Security: Putting Security Back in the Design Process
Thursday November 7, 2024 2:00pm - 2:25pm PST
Celina Stewart, Neuvik Solutions, Cyber Risk Lead

Although many organizations incorporate security into the Software Development Life Cycle, it is often treated as a compliance requirement rather than a purpose-built feature. Not treating security as a feature during the design process can lead to rework, extra complexity, or investment in functionality that does not actually address risk effectively. Further, poor integration of security can have a negative impact on otherwise well-designed applications and cause friction in user experience.

This talk encourages attendees to go beyond traditional threat modeling and defense-in-depth techniques to incorporate security as a purpose-built feature in applications. Attendees will receive tactical guidance on how to incorporate security proactively in the design process. Techniques discussed will include: how to use the organization’s risk outlook to prioritize security features; how to avoid unnecessary development costs by proactively anticipating friction in user experience; how to evaluate tradeoffs and invest in the security features needed to prevent the greatest risks.

PRO SESSION (CloudX): Petabyte-Scale Deployments: Balancing Immutability and Flexibility
Thursday November 7, 2024 2:30pm - 2:55pm PST
Anup Ghatage, Salesforce, Lead Member of Technical Staff
Varun Shah, Salesforce, Software Engineer

At Salesforce, our team does Kubernetes deployments at the petabyte scale, with 100+ clusters, 10000+ pods, and 25+ PiB of provisioned storage and innumerable Kubernetes jobs. Operating at this massive scale necessitates an approach that reduces engineering toil. Maintaining such mammoth clusters while keeping security in mind is a whole different challenge.

We specifically talk about how and why we picked immutability and Infra-as-code as the cornerstone of our design and the challenges around it. Immutability provides security and scalability and eliminates config drift. Infra-as-code guarantees that changes to our infrastructure follow the same software lifecycle. but the trade-off is a lack of flexibility to adapt to changing requirements.

In this talk, we go over the unique design choices that help us manage, grow, and configure petabyte-scale deployments at Salesforce.

[Virtual] PRO WORKSHOP (CloudX): Your Serverless Streaming Data Pipeline in Python
Tuesday November 12, 2024 10:00am - 10:50am PST

The CNCF ecosystem has exploded with a diverse array of tools, each solving a unique problem. However, integrating multiple projects often leads to challenges requiring manual intervention and custom solutions, with shell scripting commonly used as a temporary stopgap. This approach, predominantly utilising Bash, frequently results in maintenance headaches such as poor code readability and debugging difficulties.

Nushell presents a modern take on shell scripting, offering a more intuitive syntax by dropping POSIX-compliance. It includes YAML friendly data model as a fundamental design, built-in commands equivalent to curl and jq, supports simple and clear module structures, and eliminates the confusion of single vs. double quotes.

We will have a quick look at Bash vs. Nushell difference, some example case of how Nushell data model makes it easier to deal with YAML configs, and extra automation and CI/CD ideas using its module and test capabilities.

[Virtual] OPEN SESSION (CloudX): Is Your Engineering Org Really Prepared for the GenAI Revolution?!
Wednesday November 13, 2024 10:30am - 10:55am PST

[Virtual] KEYNOTE (CLOUDX): CloudZero -- Streamlining the Digital Factory: Lean Cloud Computing for Next-Gen Software Development
Wednesday November 13, 2024 1:30pm - 1:55pm PST

[Virtual] PRO SESSION (CloudX): Ephemeral Development Environment: Sometimes Short-Lived Isn't All That
Wednesday November 13, 2024 3:00pm - 3:25pm PST

[Virtual] OPEN SESSION (API): Unlocking Live Data Access for AI
Thursday November 14, 2024 10:00am - 10:25am PST

[Virtual] OPEN SESSION (CloudX):: Managing Data Security in Multi-Cloud Environments
Thursday November 14, 2024 10:30am - 10:55am PST

[Virtual Exclusive] OPEN SESSION (CloudX):Architecting platform services for mission-critical software systems
Thursday November 14, 2024 12:00pm - 12:25pm PST
Aman Sardana, Discover Financial Services, Senior Principal Application Architect

Have you ever wondered what it takes to create resilient and highly available platform services that support mission-critical software systems? Please join me to find out how you can set the right strategy and foundational architecture for building platform services that businesses can trust for their most critical workloads.

Payment systems that support real-time transaction processing are expected to be highly available and highly responsive 24/7/365. These systems must be fault-tolerant and resilient to any failures that might happen during payment transaction processing.
Mission-critical payment systems with distributed architecture often depend on platform services like distributed caching, messaging, event streaming, databases, etc. that should be independently designed for high availability and fault tolerance.
In this talk, I’ll share the approach we took for architecting and designing platform services within the payments domain that can be applied to any domain that supports business-critical processes. This methodological approach starts with establishing a capability view for platform services and then defining the implementation and physical views. You’ll also gain an understanding of other aspects of platform services like provisioning, security, observability, testing, and automation that are important for creating a well-rounded platform strategy supporting business-critical systems.

Neel Shah, Internauts Infotech, Devops Community

In today's world, where environmental concerns are at the forefront of our minds, it's crucial to consider the impact of our actions, including those within the tech industry. Software development, while driving innovation and progress, also contributes to a significant carbon footprint. This is where Green DevOps steps in, offering a powerful solution for building software that is both efficient and environmentally friendly.

Green DevOps refers to the practice of integrating sustainable practices into your software development lifecycle. This means implementing tools, techniques, and methodologies that minimize the environmental impact of software development and delivery. By adopting Green DevOps, you can achieve significant benefits, including:

Reduced energy consumption: Green DevOps practices help optimize resource utilization, leading to lower energy consumption throughout your development process. This not only translates to cost savings but also minimizes the carbon footprint of your software.

Improved resource efficiency: Green DevOps encourages developers to utilize resources wisely, minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency. This can involve practices like code optimization, infrastructure right-sizing, and efficient testing processes.

Enhanced software quality: Green DevOps principles encourage a focus on quality from the very beginning of the development process. This leads to fewer bugs and defects, resulting in software that is more reliable and requires fewer resources to maintain.

I would cover most of this topics in my talk.

[Virtual] OPEN SESSION (CloudX): The Critical Role of Observability in Cloud Native Applications: Ensuring Reliability and Minimizing Downtime
Thursday November 14, 2024 1:00pm - 1:25pm PST

[Virtual] PRO SESSION (CloudX): Building Robust Networks: The Power of CI/CD in Network Validation
Thursday November 14, 2024 2:00pm - 2:25pm PST
Naveen Achyuta, Roblox, Network Reliability Engineer

While CI/CD practices are well-established in software development, the networking field is still adapting to these methodologies. This presentation demonstrates a method for validating network configurations in a lab environment, both pre- and post-deployment, to build confidence before implementing changes in production networks. Using open-source tools, custom scripts, and containerlab, we'll walk through each step of implementing a CI/CD pipeline. This approach not only enhances confidence in network deployments but also bridges the gap between traditional networking practices and modern DevOps methodologies.

[Virtual] OPEN SESSION (CloudX): Shifting the Perspective on Security: Putting Security Back in the Design Process
Thursday November 14, 2024 2:00pm - 2:25pm PST

[Virtual] KEYNOTE (CLOUDX): Fairwinds -- K8s Is a Big Hammer - Is Everything a Nail?
Thursday November 14, 2024 2:30pm - 2:55pm PST
Andy Suderman, Fairwinds, CTO

It's been 10 years since Kubernetes came on the scene and became synonymous with running containers at scale. Suddenly everyone needed to run their apps in Kubernetes.

Or did they?

I'll discuss the different real-world scenarios where Kubernetes makes sense, and where it doesn't. We'll talk about how the hype of technology can get you into trouble, and how to evaluate when Kubernetes is the right call for your business. Don't walk down the dark alley....unless you need to.

[Virtual] KEYNOTE (CLOUDX): Trend Micro -- Utilizing a New Threat Model for Software Supply Chain in Cloud-native Systems
Thursday November 14, 2024 3:00pm - 3:25pm PST
Mike Milner, Trend Micro, VP Cloud Technology

As cloud native environments become more secure, attackers are shifting their focus to infiltrate the software supply chain. Securing the software supply chain starts at the beginning of the development process and continues throughout the application’s development lifecycle, but the complexity means that it is easy to miss links in this chain.

This session will construct a threat model that includes everything from the developer work stations, the code and open source libraries that make up an application, to the entire pipeline of building and deploying an app and the teams that maintain it.

Attendees of this session will:
• Understand the steps needed to manage and ensure the security of a broader software supply chain considering quickly evolving tech innovations.
• Learn how to determine the best tools for tracking the software development lifecycle in cloud-native settings.
• Discover how new generative AI tools can help automate some of the monotonous tasks such as fixing or updating older or broken code.
