PRO WORKSHOP (API): Powerful APIs for Building Microservices
Tuesday November 5, 2024 4:00pm - 4:50pm PST
Fernando Rocha, Diagrid, Customer Success Engineer

Starting a new project can be daunting. Choosing a technology for messaging, storage, workflows (and others) is a big commitment that takes time for developers. An ever increasing number of libraries, frameworks, cloud services and infrastructure lead to code sprawl, refactoring, lock-in, and security vulnerabilities, forcing developers to become experts of everything and ship code that’s hard to maintain. Switching between technologies is a risky, incredibly complex, and costly process. The flexibility is there, but it has a big price.

Meet Catalyst!

Powered by Dapr (Distributed Application Runtime), the 12th largest Cloud Native Computing Foundation project, Catalyst provides developers with APIs that remain consistent while the underlying infrastructure can be swapped out with little to no code changes. For teams using multiple programming languages or running in multiple clouds, Catalyst provides a single API for interacting with the underlying infrastructure, drastically reducing the amount of code and maintenance you’re on the hook for. Not only that, these APIs already embed best practices on security and reliability. If that's not amazing enough, Catalyst runs as-a-service, so there’s nothing to install or manage!

Join us to learn how Catalyst can add infrastructure flexibility, zero trust security, and fault tolerance to your distributed solutions with no extra development time!

PRO WORKSHOP (API): AI Needs APIs: Dynamic Data Access for Next-Gen Experiences
Tuesday November 5, 2024 5:00pm - 5:50pm PST
Andrew Carlson, Apollo GraphQL, Principal Field Architect

Gartner predicts that by 2026, more than 30% of the increase in demand for APIs will come from artificial intelligence and tools using large language models. API sprawl is a hazardous form of technical debt. It has hard costs from hosting and scaling a fleet of APIs, real security risks and an increased operational burden from the sheer number of APIs that platform engineering teams need to manage. With GraphQL, any client, even an LLM, can request exactly the data they need without over or under-fetching. And with federated GraphQL, the data can come from any underlying API.

Learn popular use cases for implementing the graph in an AI-driven experience, how organizations can safely adopt AI on a spectrum from low to high trust, and why GraphQL is an ideal API access layer for AI.

PRO SESSION (API): Unleashing GenAI's Potential for Advanced API Linting
Thursday November 7, 2024 9:30am - 9:55am PST
Sridhar Kunisetty, Equinix, Principal Architect

An API linter plays a crucial role in ensuring that API specifications adhere to established standards, best practices, guidelines, and are free from potential errors. It is an essential component in the development process to ensure that APIs are well-designed, consistent, maintainable, reliable, secure and follow the organization's conventions and guidelines.

We present a new approach to API linting by harnessing the power of Generative AI (GenAI). Our solution involves training a Large Language Model (LLM) to act as an Advanced API Linter, capable of not only answering correctness queries but also analyzing API specifications and providing a comprehensive list of errors, violations, and issues.

Unlike traditional API linters, our GenAI solution eliminates the need for complex validation rules and specialized expertise. By training the LLM with our organization's API standards, best practices, and guidelines, we enable it to understand and enforce these rules effortlessly. Moreover, the training process is straightforward, and we can alternatively provide the necessary content as a context in the prompt to the LLM.

One of the key advantages of our GenAI approach is its user-friendliness. Instead of grappling with new syntax or programming languages to define validation rules, users can express their requirements in plain English. This democratizes API linting, empowering developers to improve API quality through self-service and facilitating the seamless adoption of an API-First approach.

During this session, we will showcase a range of use cases that demonstrate how GenAI can be leveraged to achieve advanced API linting capabilities. Additionally, we will explore the potential of utilizing a Small Language Model (SLM) as an alternative to the LLM, opening up new possibilities for API linting efficiency.

Join us as we unveil the future of API linting, where GenAI revolutionizes the development process, enhances API quality, and empowers developers to build robust and reliable APIs effortlessly.

OPEN SESSION (API): Unlocking Live Data Access for AI
Thursday November 7, 2024 10:00am - 10:25am PST
Anushrut Gupta, Hasura, Senior Product Manager, Generative AI

“Over the last 3 months, summarize the top billing issues faced by my enterprise customers within the first 30 days of their onboarding.”

On the surface, building an internal AI customer intelligence application that can answer questions like this is a perfect use-case for Gen AI.
However, building a production ready app that retrieves the data (RAG) before hauling it off to your favorite LLM for summarization soon becomes a terrible engineering experience.

The data is spread across 3 places: a tickets database (eg: elastic), a CRM (eg: salesforce) and your user-accounts transactional database (eg: postgres).
In production, your app can’t access the data from these databases directly. Given security & privacy concerns, your app won’t have direct access to these databases.
Making independent retrieval requests to each of these sources and then joining them in memory might be prohibitively expensive and needs a level of query planning to do efficiently.
Moving all data into one location is expensive to build, maintain and govern
Predictable quality is further made hard because underlying data formats and storage interfaces are continuously changing.
Different types of user queries might require additional filtering and joining of data, which becomes hard to generalize.

APIs solve almost all of these very well known challenges. APIs offer standardization and security. APIs can provide a stable contract to interact with underlying data.

And in all likelihood, you already have APIs on these internal and external data sources.

Ironically, while APIs have become a necessity for other parts of the stack, they are clearly not the first thing that AI engineers building RAG reach for.

In this talk, we’ll discuss:
Why API based retrieval doesn’t work well for RAG
What we need from our existing internal and external APIs to make them RAG ready
How we can get existing APIs to become RAG ready without needing to rebuild the APIs

This talk will be technical, with code demos (possibly with some live coding!) and end with key resources (reference architectures, API best practices, tools/technologies) that attendees can take back to their work.

PRO SESSION (API): APIs Without Borders: Exploring the World of Locationless API Management
Thursday November 7, 2024 2:30pm - 2:55pm PST
Vamsi Ravula, Red Hat, Developer Advocate
Hugo Guerrero, Red Hat, Sr Principal Developer Advocate

Locationless API management is a paradigm shift in API governance and security. This innovative approach allows organizations to efficiently manage their APIs distributed across multiple clouds and clusters without exposing them publicly over the internet. Instead, it leverages a sophisticated layer seven service network, offering a secure and seamless solution for API management. By operating locationless, businesses can maintain a high degree of control and privacy over their APIs, mitigating the risks associated with public exposure while facilitating efficient communication between services across diverse deployment environments.

A Layer 7 service network provides the necessary infrastructure to establish secure connections between services, regardless of location. Through this network, APIs can be efficiently managed and accessed within a controlled environment, ensuring that sensitive data and functionalities remain protected. This locationless API management approach not only enhances security but also streamlines operations, as it minimizes the complexities of public-facing API management. As organizations continue to prioritize data privacy and security, locationless API management, powered by technologies like a Layer 7 service network, emerges as a game-changing solution that empowers businesses to securely manage and utilize their APIs without the need for public internet exposure.

[Virtual Exclusive] PRO WORKSHOP (API): Learn to Maximize AI performance through Open-Source Computer Vision based Retail Solution
Tuesday November 12, 2024 11:00am - 11:50am PST
Neethu Elizabeth Simon, Intel, Senior Software Engineer
Antonio Martinez, Intel, Software Engineer
Brian McGinn, Intel, Software Solution Developer

Computer vision is revolutionizing various industries, and retail is no exception. While AI applications have many benefits, proof-of-concepts do not scale successfully into larger, implemented deployments. Retailers, independent software vendors (ISVs), and system integrators (SIs) require a good understanding of both hardware and software, maintaining AI models in production and having in-depth knowledge of costs involved in setting up and scaling these systems. Vision workloads are significantly larger, complex, undergo multiple stages of processing and therefore require systems to be architected, built, and deployed with several considerations. To make it easier for software developers to understand the optimizations and hardware capabilities, Automated Self-Checkout is developed- an open-source initiative for vision-enabled retail use cases, providing optimized code blocks, documentation, and performance benchmark data to enhance and accelerate developer’s product and project work.

This Open-Source project is a community developed project that provides the tools needed to launch and benchmark a computer vision-based workload on your local device.

In this hands-on workshop we will demonstrate how to utilize the automated-self-checkout solution to run Docker containers with open-source Intel OpenVINO toolkit and benchmark their performance on different hardware platforms. Through this interactive workshop, attendees will be able to setup and run the AI computer vision-based retail pipelines using this solution. Attendees will also gain knowledge on how to benchmark the workloads using this tool for obtaining maximum hardware performance.

[Virtual] PRO WORKSHOP (API): Using Vector Databases for Multimodal Search and Retrieval Augmented Generation
Tuesday November 12, 2024 1:00pm - 1:50pm PST
Zain Hasan, Together AI, Senior ML DevRel Engineer

Many real-world problems are inherently multimodal, from the communicative modalities humans use such as spoken language and gestures to the force, sensory, and visual sensors used in robotics. For machine learning models to address these problems and interact more naturally and wholistically with the world around them and ultimately be more general and powerful reasoning engines, we need them to understand data across all of its corresponding images, video, text, audio, and tactile representations.

In this talk, Zain Hasan will discuss how we can use open-source multimodal embedding models in conjunction with large generative multimodal models that can that can see, hear, read, and feel data(!), to perform cross-modal search(searching audio with images, videos with text etc.) and multimodal retrieval augmented generation (MM-RAG) at the billion-object scale with the help of open source vector databases. I will also demonstrate, with live code demos, how being able to perform this cross-modal retrieval in real-time can enables users to use LLMs that can reason over their enterprise multimodal data. This talk will revolve around how we can scale the usage of multimodal embedding and generative models in production.

Tuesday November 12, 2024 1:00pm - 1:50pm PST

[Virtual] PRO WORKSHOP (API): AI Needs APIs: Dynamic Data Access for Next-Gen Experiences
Tuesday November 12, 2024 2:00pm - 2:50pm PST

[Virtual] OPEN SESSION (API): Unleashing GenAI's Potential for Advanced API Linting
Thursday November 14, 2024 9:30am - 9:55am PST

[Virtual] OPEN SESSION (API): Unlocking Live Data Access for AI
Thursday November 14, 2024 10:00am - 10:25am PST
