For dev teams building and training their own AI models, ending up with AI solutions plagued by hallucinations and reliability issues is a (rightfully) huge concern. The good news: vector databases make generative AI considerably more reliable and less prone to hallucinations. The even better news: a number of *100% free and open source* vector databases are especially great options for supporting AI workloads.
The good news keeps coming for teams considering an open source vector database path: it isn’t necessary to invest in implementing new or exotic or proprietary or specialized data-layer solutions to harness vector databases. Many enterprises will find that their existing infrastructure can already support AI workloads (while continuing to provide the familiar data availability, scalability, and performance they already know they can trust). In particular, PostgreSQL (with the pgvector extension), OpenSearch, and Apache Cassandra 5.0 (with its new native vector indexing) are three completely open source technologies—no proprietary or open core solutions needed—that tick all the boxes for meeting enterprises’ AI workloads requirements.
Attendees of this Dev Innovation Summit session will learn how open source vector databases utilize vector embeddings to enable more accurate LLMs, and how to strategically approach and implement retrieval augmented generation (RAG) processes. Attendees will also come away with a clear understanding of the advantages offered by PostgreSQL with pgvector, OpenSearch and Cassandra 5.0 as particularly mature open source vector database strategies ready to jumpstart your organization’s competitive AI capabilities.

As our firm started modernization of API (Rest, Cloud, Gateway) it was evident that program needed to be accelerated rather than taking one API at a time. Team enthusiastic tech geeks defined standard technology, tools, process, development, and deployment procedure. Best thing is it is all automated and friendly UI where even non-technologist can develop API without knowing java or CICD. Our organization is contract first approach. Created various financial business need based swagger templates to jump start contract creation process, it goes through rigor governance committee review to avoid redundancy and to ensure new contract meets defined standards. After governance approval we use proprietary framework generates java code for Authentication, Authorization, Monitoring, logging, IO, Database, Caching etc.. It creates required configuration files and all deployable. Using generated java code, API goes through successful build procedure, and it auto deploys API runnable to cloud environment and the swagger proxy to envoy-based gateway. All these activities are completed less than 30 min from API contract to deployment which helps various development teams and business in focusing on business logic than infrastructure. Through this process we're able to decrease the time to market, bring consistent development practices and of course save money and bring operational efficiencies across the heterogeneous technologies and teams. Behind the scenes we use regular SDLC Swaggerhub, Github, Java Springboot, Jenkins, uDeploy, Venafi, GSLB, Azure and Envoy. Advantage is person who is developing API don't need to know how to do but they just focus on what business wants.

The cloud-centric world has turned every line of code into a buying decision and highlighted the economic aspects of software design. After first struggling with the ramifications of this, (and a meager $3000.00 budget on my first cloud project in 2009) I discovered how cloud economics presented an opportunity to merge efficiency concepts taken from classic manufacturing with modern software engineering and architecture.
Since that time we have seen an industry wide focus on cloud cost management and new practices like FinOps emerge, but few have explored how to apply cloud economics directly to modern DevOps practices resulting in million dollar lines of code and unprofitable system design that has soured some on cloud computing as a whole. My experience however has been very different. I will share the lessons I've learned over the last 15 years treating cost as a key non-functional requirement during development.
By integrating the Theory of Constraints, Lean Manufacturing, and unit economics, alongside cloud cost efficiency goals and performance as crucial inputs, I will share a strategy that fosters continuous improvement and boosts profitability under current consumption-based cloud pricing models. This approach ensures an economical path from concept to deployment, and ongoing operations, without compromising innovation and time-to-market.

Two aspects of resolvers have an outsized influence on their performance: the size of the execution context, and the way we compute their value. In the Node.js implementation of graphql, promises wrapping primitive values are especially disruptive, since they add a large computing overhead. The context size creates a memory usage baseline that can rise very quickly with even small additions to the context, when there are many concurrent contexts. The execution can create temporary objects, increasing memory usage. Often-run resolvers, such as those responsible for filling out large arrays of objects, can become performance bottlenecks.
At Auction.com, our search results page (SRP) requests up to 500 items of roughly 80 fields each. The query resolving these fields was suffering a high latency. We shall examine the tools to instrument our code and identify memory usage and CPU utilization bottlenecks.
Our realtime elements (e.g. realtime updates to the status of currently viewed properties) are implemented using a translation of kafka messages to graphql updates. We shall present the tools and procedures to reduce memory usage and CPU usage when fanning out such messages.
Problem: The challenge at the heart of this presentation is the efficient training of AI models in scenarios where real-world data is limited, sensitive, or expensive to acquire. This issue is particularly pressing in fields such as autonomous vehicle development and medical research, where the quality and diversity of training data directly influence the performance and reliability of AI systems. Addressing this problem is crucial for advancing AI capabilities while ensuring ethical standards and privacy are upheld.
Methodology: To tackle this challenge, our approach involves the creation and use of synthetic data. The methodology encompasses techniques for generating high-fidelity, diverse synthetic datasets that mimic real-world complexities without compromising privacy or incurring high costs. Key techniques include Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), simulation-based synthesis, and rule-based data generation. The presentation will detail these methods, along with strategies for validating the realism and utility of synthetic data in training robust AI models.
Conclusions: Preliminary results demonstrate that synthetic data can significantly enhance AI model training, especially in constrained environments. By leveraging synthetic datasets, we've observed improvements in model accuracy, robustness, and generalizability across several applications. The presentation will outline these findings, showcasing examples where synthetic data has successfully bridged the gap between the data needs of AI systems and the limitations of real-world datasets.

Matthew Bae, Deloitte, Specialist Lead in API & Integration Offering
Modern integration techniques, typically implemented through APIs and Microservices, play a pivotal role in propelling digital transformation initiatives. These deployments often occur in highly distributed environments, where a large number of small APIs and Microservices are simultaneously developed by different teams.
This simultaneous development can present challenges such as coordination among teams and delays due to waiting for other teams' completion. Overcoming these challenges requires distributed development techniques like design-first approaches and test-driven methodologies. In these methods, interface specifications written in a common structured language serve as the "contract" to manage interface agreements between applications. These interface contracts, which are machine-readable, and version controlled, facilitate trust among teams and allow parallel development and testing of applications in an early stage of the application development lifecycle. The contracts also aid in dependency management, planning for integrated testing, and releases of all related APIs and Microservices.
This session discusses a GenAI-assisted solution to standardize the development of API specifications, and automate the publishing of versioned, traceable API documentation in an API catalog portal. This pro

Managing data at Netflix scale presents unique challenges, especially with multiple applications requiring diverse databases. Traditional methods risk database sprawl, fragmented knowledge, and redundant efforts. Netflix's Data Access team addresses these issues with Data Abstractions, creating a streamlined data access layer.
Our paved path abstractions—KeyValue, Time Series, Graph, and more—offer robust APIs that hide underlying database complexities. Application teams simply specify their access patterns and requirements, and select the appropriate abstraction. Our platform then handles capacity planning, hardware provisioning, and database deployment.
Data Abstractions allow us to transparently switch databases, ensuring optimal performance and scalability as use cases evolve. This approach has enabled one of the largest database migrations at Netflix, completely transparent to the client. This innovative approach allows Netflix to maintain a high level of service reliability and operational efficiency, even as new database technologies emerge.
Learning objectives 1) Gain a comprehensive understanding of what Data Abstractions are and how they simplify database management by providing a robust data access layer. 2) Discover how Netflix's platform handles capacity planning and hardware provisioning based on application teams' specified access patterns and requirements. 3) Explore the architecture, scale, and novel techniques employed by Netflix to operate Data Abstractions reliably at massive scale.
