In an era where digital transformations drive business value, the importance of developing consistent, scalable, and robust APIs cannot be overstated. As teams expand and projects multiply, maintaining a unified API design can pose significant challenges. This presentation delves into the powerful combination of linting and reusable models as tools to navigate these challenges and ensure consistency across large-scale API designs.

We will explore API linting using the open-source Spectral project to enable teams to identify and rectify inconsistencies during design. In tandem we will navigate the need for reusable models, recognizing that the best specification is the one you don't have to write or lint at all! These two approaches not only facilitate the smooth integration of services but also foster collaboration across teams by providing a shared, consistent foundation.

[Virtual] PRO SESSION (Dev Innovation): You’re Not Hallucinating: How to Optimize AI Reliability with 100% Open Source Vector Databases
Wednesday November 13, 2024 10:00am - 10:50am PST
Anil Inamdar, Instaclustr by NetApp, Head of Data Solutions

For dev teams building and training their own AI models, ending up with AI solutions plagued by hallucinations and reliability issues is a (rightfully) huge concern. The good news: vector databases make generative AI considerably more reliable and less prone to hallucinations. The even better news: a number of *100% free and open source* vector databases are especially great options for supporting AI workloads.

The good news keeps coming for teams considering an open source vector database path: it isn’t necessary to invest in implementing new or exotic or proprietary or specialized data-layer solutions to harness vector databases. Many enterprises will find that their existing infrastructure can already support AI workloads (while continuing to provide the familiar data availability, scalability, and performance they already know they can trust). In particular, PostgreSQL (with the pgvector extension), OpenSearch, and Apache Cassandra 5.0 (with its new native vector indexing) are three completely open source technologies—no proprietary or open core solutions needed—that tick all the boxes for meeting enterprises’ AI workloads requirements.

Attendees of this Dev Innovation Summit session will learn how open source vector databases utilize vector embeddings to enable more accurate LLMs, and how to strategically approach and implement retrieval augmented generation (RAG) processes. Attendees will also come away with a clear understanding of the advantages offered by PostgreSQL with pgvector, OpenSearch and Cassandra 5.0 as particularly mature open source vector database strategies ready to jumpstart your organization’s competitive AI capabilities.

[Virtual] OPEN SESSION (CloudX): Is Your Engineering Org Really Prepared for the GenAI Revolution?!
Wednesday November 13, 2024 10:30am - 10:55am PST
Yishai Beeri, LinearB, CTO

GenAI has gone from generally available, novel technology to widely adopted in a matter of months. Most engineering organizations are using GenAI to generate code, write tests, and assist in code reviews. New code is becoming dirt cheap to write - but our delivery pipelines remain miserably unprepared for the tsunami of new code flowing at a much more rapid pace.

Our current pipelines need a hard reset to prepare us for the GenAI revolution - and engineering managers need to get started TODAY.

This talk will dive into where GenAI is starting to break down our delivery pipelines. While scaling CI/CD is easy, and we can always add a few more workers, scaling the humans in the process is the hard part. This talk will demonstrate how massive amounts of new machine-generated code will impact our pipelines, in ways that will require either greater headcount, or smarter, automated pipelines. You'll come away with ideas for how to modernize your delivery pipeline so you can fully embrace the GenAI revolution.

Wednesday November 13, 2024 11:30am - 11:55am PST
Josip Stuhli,  Sofascore, CTO

A story of how our infrastructure evolved over time to accommodate an increasing number of users - from on-premise to cloud and back down.

How does one make an infrastructure to handle more than a couple of users?

How do you go from 100 to 1000 to 100,000 to tens of millions?

What happens when due to popular demand hundreds of thousands of users hit your servers at the same time?

I'll tell you a story of how a small team of people managed to move software and services from one server to two, and then to dozens on cloud and then back to on-premise. What we encountered on the way, where we failed, and how we solved it.

[Virtual Exclusive] OPEN SESSION (API): API Robot - Swagger Contract to Deployment – in Minutes
Wednesday November 13, 2024 12:00pm - 12:25pm PST
Basu Sugeerappa, Fidelity Investments, Director, API Center of Excellence

As our firm started modernization of API (Rest, Cloud, Gateway) it was evident that program needed to be accelerated rather than taking one API at a time. Team enthusiastic tech geeks defined standard technology, tools, process, development, and deployment procedure. Best thing is it is all automated and friendly UI where even non-technologist can develop API without knowing java or CICD. Our organization is contract first approach. Created various financial business need based swagger templates to jump start contract creation process, it goes through rigor governance committee review to avoid redundancy and to ensure new contract meets defined standards. After governance approval we use proprietary framework generates java code for Authentication, Authorization, Monitoring, logging, IO, Database, Caching etc.. It creates required configuration files and all deployable. Using generated java code, API goes through successful build procedure, and it auto deploys API runnable to cloud environment and the swagger proxy to envoy-based gateway. All these activities are completed less than 30 min from API contract to deployment which helps various development teams and business in focusing on business logic than infrastructure. Through this process we're able to decrease the time to market, bring consistent development practices and of course save money and bring operational efficiencies across the heterogeneous technologies and teams. Behind the scenes we use regular SDLC Swaggerhub, Github, Java Springboot, Jenkins, uDeploy, Venafi, GSLB, Azure and Envoy. Advantage is person who is developing API don't need to know how to do but they just focus on what business wants.

[Virtual] KEYNOTE (Dev Innovation): Fine --The Rise of AI Agents
Wednesday November 13, 2024 12:30pm - 12:55pm PST
Jonathan Harel, Fine, VP R&D and Cofounder

25 years after Agent Smith coined “Never send a human to do a machine’s job”, this futuristic idea seems closer than ever...

Not so long ago, AI was known for its ability to excel at specific tasks (“cat vs dog”), earning it the reputation of a specialist. However, with the advent of Large Language Models like OpenAI’s GPT, AI has transformed into a generalist, capable of writing naturally, answering questions, and even generating code. Despite facing limitations such as hallucinations, knowledge cutoffs, and struggles with basic math, these AI systems have opened up a world of possibilities.

Today, the next frontier in AI development are AI agents. By combining the power of LLMs with advanced capabilities such as planning, reflection, and tool use, AI agents are becoming the “jack-of-all-trades” in the tech world. Drawing inspiration from human cognition, AI Agents can accomplish complex goals, thinking and acting much like us humans. Join us as we explore agentic workflows and discuss the role of developers in guiding AI agents and shaping the future of AI. We’ll get familiar with the world of AI agents, and understand their potential to revolutionize the way we work and interact with technology, ultimately allowing humans (and developers 😉) to focus on the bigger picture.

[Virtual] KEYNOTE (CLOUDX): CloudZero -- Streamlining the Digital Factory: Lean Cloud Computing for Next-Gen Software Development
Wednesday November 13, 2024 1:30pm - 1:55pm PST
Erik Peterson, CloudZero, CTO & Founder

The cloud-centric world has turned every line of code into a buying decision and highlighted the economic aspects of software design. After first struggling with the ramifications of this, (and a meager $3000.00 budget on my first cloud project in 2009) I discovered how cloud economics presented an opportunity to merge efficiency concepts taken from classic manufacturing with modern software engineering and architecture.

Since that time we have seen an industry wide focus on cloud cost management and new practices like FinOps emerge, but few have explored how to apply cloud economics directly to modern DevOps practices resulting in million dollar lines of code and unprofitable system design that has soured some on cloud computing as a whole. My experience however has been very different. I will share the lessons I've learned over the last 15 years treating cost as a key non-functional requirement during development.

By integrating the Theory of Constraints, Lean Manufacturing, and unit economics, alongside cloud cost efficiency goals and performance as crucial inputs, I will share a strategy that fosters continuous improvement and boosts profitability under current consumption-based cloud pricing models. This approach ensures an economical path from concept to deployment, and ongoing operations, without compromising innovation and time-to-market.

[Virtual Exclusive] PRO SESSION (API): In Memory Of Travails
Wednesday November 13, 2024 2:00pm - 2:25pm PST
Gabriel Schulhof, Auction.com, Senior Software Engineer

Two aspects of resolvers have an outsized influence on their performance: the size of the execution context, and the way we compute their value. In the Node.js implementation of graphql, promises wrapping primitive values are especially disruptive, since they add a large computing overhead. The context size creates a memory usage baseline that can rise very quickly with even small additions to the context, when there are many concurrent contexts. The execution can create temporary objects, increasing memory usage. Often-run resolvers, such as those responsible for filling out large arrays of objects, can become performance bottlenecks.

At Auction.com, our search results page (SRP) requests up to 500 items of roughly 80 fields each. The query resolving these fields was suffering a high latency. We shall examine the tools to instrument our code and identify memory usage and CPU utilization bottlenecks.

Our realtime elements (e.g. realtime updates to the status of currently viewed properties) are implemented using a translation of kafka messages to graphql updates. We shall present the tools and procedures to reduce memory usage and CPU usage when fanning out such messages.

[Virtual] PRO SESSION (Dev Innovation): Meet The Web Framework From The Future
Wednesday November 13, 2024 2:00pm - 2:25pm PST
Dev Agrawal, Smart Data, Software Engineer

What would you envision your futuristic web framework to be like? What kind of properties would it have, and what would it enable for you?

For me, the future of web frameworks should be performant by default, developer friendly, minimal but flexible to business needs, and use both the client and the server runtimes to their maximum potential.

It’s a tough criteria, and most frameworks fail to meet a lot of these requirements. However, Solid Start is a relatively new framework that checks all of these boxes, aims for a very high ceiling, and has already inspired many popular frameworks to add similar features.

Let’s take a look at the shape of frameworks to come in this session by building a sample application with Solid Start, witness its incredible UX and DX capabilities, and how it compares to other frameworks like Next.js and Astro.

Developing cross-platform applications is complex. Some frameworks allow us to share the business logic and some go further and allow us to share the UI layer. But even then – working with device hardware requires developers familiar with each target platform to maintain it and can still lead to error-prone platform-specific code.

What if you could write it all in either C# or XAML, from any dev environment, deploy to any platform, at 5x the speed, and have it all pixel-perfect without any lock-in? Enter Uno Platform, an open-source project enabling amazing dev productivity for building Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, Linux, and WebAssembly apps!

[Virtual] PRO SESSION (CloudX): Ephemeral Development Environment: Sometimes Short-Lived Isn't All That
Wednesday November 13, 2024 3:00pm - 3:25pm PST
Ramiro Berrelleza, Okteto, Founder

We've been told to look for long-lasting things and products, but one thing that's better when it's short-lived and ephemeral is: ephemeral development environments.

Development environments refer to the tools and platforms developers use to write, test, and debug their code. In today's fast-paced technology world, developers must be able to adapt quickly and efficiently, which is where ephemeral development environments come in handy.

This talk will cover and show the advantages of these environments over traditional setups:

- easy to experiment with different ideas
- no pains of dependency management
- easily replicable and maintainable thanks to version control
- always up to date and secure
- reduces clutter and technical debt

The talk will also connect these advantages to real-world outcomes organizations care about - developer productivity and happiness, and time to market.

[Virtual] PRO SESSION (API): Empowering Concurrent Development of Distributed Systems with GenAI-Assisted API Spec Management
Wednesday November 13, 2024 3:30pm - 3:55pm PST
Matthew Bae, Deloitte, Specialist Lead in API & Integration Offering

Modern integration techniques, typically implemented through APIs and Microservices, play a pivotal role in propelling digital transformation initiatives. These deployments often occur in highly distributed environments, where a large number of small APIs and Microservices are simultaneously developed by different teams.

This simultaneous development can present challenges such as coordination among teams and delays due to waiting for other teams' completion. Overcoming these challenges requires distributed development techniques like design-first approaches and test-driven methodologies. In these methods, interface specifications written in a common structured language serve as the "contract" to manage interface agreements between applications. These interface contracts, which are machine-readable, and version controlled, facilitate trust among teams and allow parallel development and testing of applications in an early stage of the application development lifecycle. The contracts also aid in dependency management, planning for integrated testing, and releases of all related APIs and Microservices.

This session discusses a GenAI-assisted solution to standardize the development of API specifications, and automate the publishing of versioned, traceable API documentation in an API catalog portal. This pro

[Virtual] OPEN SESSION (API): Scaling Data Management at Netflix: The Power of Data Abstractions
Wednesday November 13, 2024 3:30pm - 3:55pm PST
Raj Ummadisetty, Netflix, Senior Software Engineer
Vidhya Arvind, Netflix, Staff Software Engineer

Managing data at Netflix scale presents unique challenges, especially with multiple applications requiring diverse databases. Traditional methods risk database sprawl, fragmented knowledge, and redundant efforts. Netflix's Data Access team addresses these issues with Data Abstractions, creating a streamlined data access layer.

Our paved path abstractions—KeyValue, Time Series, Graph, and more—offer robust APIs that hide underlying database complexities. Application teams simply specify their access patterns and requirements, and select the appropriate abstraction. Our platform then handles capacity planning, hardware provisioning, and database deployment.

Data Abstractions allow us to transparently switch databases, ensuring optimal performance and scalability as use cases evolve. This approach has enabled one of the largest database migrations at Netflix, completely transparent to the client. This innovative approach allows Netflix to maintain a high level of service reliability and operational efficiency, even as new database technologies emerge.

Learning objectives
1) Gain a comprehensive understanding of what Data Abstractions are and how they simplify database management by providing a robust data access layer.
2) Discover how Netflix's platform handles capacity planning and hardware provisioning based on application teams' specified access patterns and requirements.
3) Explore the architecture, scale, and novel techniques employed by Netflix to operate Data Abstractions reliably at massive scale.
